Vintage painting, custom cut MDF, acrylic paint on canvas

63 x 63cm

A found vintage oil painting and acrylic painted wood on canvas with a three-dimensional element. The work is mounted behind glass within a white, wooden frame.

This mid-century find was painted by an unknown artist. It has been divided into concentric circles and then raised. Laser-cut MDF rings which dissect the forest scene are painted in similar colours chosen from the original oil painting.

Although the colours are linked, there is still a strong sense of contrast between the detailed organic brushstrokes of the oil painting and the sharp bold shape of the wooden circles. The painted rings radiate out from the centre creating a sense of movement for the viewer.

This work is part of a series of pieces appropriating old oil paintings and giving them a new lease of life for a contemporary audience.
