Vintage painting, custom cut MDF, acrylic paint on canvas
55 x 87cm
A found vintage oil painting and acrylic painted wood on canvas with a three-dimensional element. The work is mounted behind glass within a white, wooden frame.
This mid-century find was painted by an unknown artist. It has been divided into sections and then raised on wooden panels. Painted in similar colours chosen from the original painting, laser-cut MDF strips dissect the ocean scene.
Although the colours are linked, there is still a strong sense of contrast between the organic brushstrokes of the oil painting and the sharp bold shape of the wooden strips. A sense of movement already provided by the water is heightened with the addition of the stripes and change of colour moving across the work.
This work is part of a series of pieces appropriating old oil paintings and giving them a new lease of life for a contemporary audience.
