Vintage board game cards & playing pieces on canvas
47 x 59cm
A collection of original, vintage board game cards and playing pieces arranged on painted canvas with a cut three-dimensional element. The work is mounted behind glass within a white, wooden frame.
These items form part of a popular, mid-century British board game discovered at a London flea market. Arranged in numerical order, the horses rest upon painted, wooden plinths, while the coloured bands on the cards have been cut and raised from the background.
Showing signs of heavy use, the chipped metallic paint on the playing pieces indicate the personal history behind this particular game, whereas the colours and style of the graphics evoke nostalgia for the era. The use of repetition and the two directions that the playing pieces face create a sense of movement.
This work is the first in a series combining three-dimensional objects and vintage, paper ephemera.
